Welcome to Angama Mara, a remarkable new owner-run safari lodge inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’. Located high above the floor of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, Angama Mara overlooks Kenya’s Maasai Mara, considered by many as the loveliest game reserve on the continent.
Here guests will find a lodge where everything is as it ought to be: two intimate camps of just fifteen tented suites each, a private airfield and access to the Mara below, tailor-made safari days and a famously warm Kenyan welcome.
A WINDOW ONTO THE WORLD
Architect duo Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens, and Jan Allan, Kenya’s King of Canvas, designed Angama Mara’s elegant and classical tented suites with an 11-metre wide floor-to-ceiling glass front. Each tent has the same breathtaking view – no one is better than the last – and every day, the sunrise provides guests with early morning theatre as the hot air balloons float gently by.
AT A GLANCE
- The glass frontage offers views from the bed, the bath, the sitting area, the shower and even the w/c
- The roof and other three sides are canvas – classic safari olive on the outside and cream on the inside for romance
- Each tented suite is over 100 sqm, including spacious wooden decks
- Decks are for in-room dining and red rocking chair safaris
- Sleep with the sliding doors open, for the fresh air and sounds of the wild, with meshed doors latched for safety
And because Angama Mara welcomes children of 6 years and older, the lodge has four sets of interconnecting tents, which allow children to move freely between their tent and their parents’ in complete safety and privacy.
BEST SEAT IN THE HOUSE
SET ON THE EDGE OF AFRICA’S GREAT RIFT VALLEY
There is little that is conventional about the creation of Angama Mara, with views that stretch for miles across the Maasai Mara 300 meters below.
SETTING ANGAMA MARA APART:
- The rare beauty of the site has an emotional effect on visitors – an almost dreamlike quality of being somewhere ‘between heaven and earth’
- Guests instantly connect with the romance of the setting, where some of the loveliest scenes from the movie Out of Africa were filmed
- No Tented Suite has the best view, nor the worst – all are spread along the edge of the Rift Valley
- There is an overwhelming feeling of ‘I have been here before’
- Unrivalled exclusivity, with a private airfield, and a track directly down into the Reserve – a mere 10-minute drive
- The 700 hectare site directly borders the Mara Triangle, with 1.2 km of Rift Valley frontage, it’s own forests and game a-plenty
SOME FAST FACTS:
- Two totally separate camps of just 15 tents each, every one with magnificent 180° views

- The dramatic guest areas are for dining, drinking and lounging, and include a handsome brick-clad library
- The Pavilion, set between the two camps, is home to the Safari Shop, a swimming pool (12 x 6m), and the Fitness Room – guests never need to walk more than 10 minutes to go anywhere
- The lodge is serviced by a private, hard-top airfield – just a 5-minute drive away
